SharePoint Hosting

SharePoint which is a web application platform inside the Microsoft Office server suite. It was launched in 2001 which combines various types of functions which are traditionally separate applications like intranet, extra net, content management, document management , enterprise search and an enterprise application store. SharePoint servers have now traditionally been deployed for internal use in businesses and big departments alongside Microsoft Exchange, Skype for Business, and other Web Apps. However, Microsoft's Office version 365 that provides software as a service offering that includes a version of SharePoint has led to increased usage of SharePoint in small organizations.

As Office 365 provides SharePoint as a service, installing SharePoint on premises requires multiple virtual machines that is at least two separate physical servers. The software is based upon an architecture known as n-tier service oriented. Enterprise application software like email servers, ERP etc. either requires or integrates along with elements of SharePoint. As it is an application platform, SharePoint provides not only central management but also provides governance and security controls. The SharePoint platform manages Internet Information Services through form-based management tooling.

SharePoint is basically configured through a web browser. The web-based user interface provides max of the configuration capability of the product. Depending upon your permission level, the web interface can be used to do three things basically. Firstly, manipulate content structure, create or delete sites, modify navigation and security, add or remove apps, site structure. Secondly, enable or disable product features, uploading custom designs or turning on integrations with other Office products. Thirdly, configuring basic workflows, viewing usage analytics, managing metadata, configure search options etc.

SharePoint is usually used to store and manage electronic documents and assets. Combination of the Office Suite, Office Apps on Mobile Devices and Office Web Apps enables editing scenarios while the One Drive for Business (or the third-party tools) enables offline synchronization. It provides integrated version of history tracking, collaborative live editing and searching capabilities. These capabilities are configurable to comply with the record management or legal discovery requirements. SharePoint also provides searching and 'graph' functionality enabling tracking of projects, documents, and users. Centralised location for storing, versioning, and collaborating on documents significantly reduce dependence on email for collaboration.
